Realizing Your Potential

We’ve all had moments in our life where we evaluate our potential. Or rather, what could have been our reality in an ideal world.

Have you ever looked back on your years and wished you made slightly different decisions?

If just a few things were altered, then just maybe your potential would have changed as well. Maybe you look back on the time started playing an instrument—but then quit shortly after, the time you gave up a sport, or most painfully—missed job opportunities.

Our career life is arguably one of the biggest influences in our lives and on our potential. We spend the majority of our time there, make most of our friends in the field, and the quality of living is largely dependent on the resources provided by your career.

So, how do you deal with regrets regarding your potential?

You let it go. If you don’t, you’ll always be stuck. Instead, understand that everyone has missed opportunities. It’s a level playing field.  However, that’s not an excuse to be complacent. Rather the opposite. It’s a call to action to never let opportunities pass you by again.

“It is never too late to be who you might have been.” George Elliot

Your life could be greatly enhanced in any aspect you want to change. This advancement starts with a single decision.

If you’re unhappy, unappreciated, or stuck—decide to leave and make your move. Scour your skill set and interests and find a career that will develop your abilities and reward your efforts.

Starting Points for Realizing Your Potential

You’ve already made the decision that you’re ready to make a change in your life and recognize and fulfill your potential. Now, we have a few starting tips for you.

  1. Let go of fear. Generally, the reason we stay so long in an unfavorable environment is out of fear. Fear of the unknown, discomfort, or failure. Fear will never help you develop your potential.
  2. Consciously look for change. Oftentimes, people unknowingly make a lateral move versus truly advancing. Lateral moves have their time in place, but if you’re looking for something different—it could potentially be futile.
  3. Discover what’s non-negotiable. What aspects do you need? The answer to this will be different for everyone. It could be income, incentives, camaraderie, or ability to grow. Whatever it is for you, make sure it can be achieved in your future career.
  4. Be present. Completely throw yourself into your career. That means going to all the training, making an effort to build bonds, and going beyond your comfort zone.

It really isn’t too late to start all over again. The sooner you accept this, the sooner you will realize your potential.
